New Job, New City, New OS

L.A.

Last week I started my new full-time position with Yahoo’s Entertainment division. I’ll be working with a crack team of designers and developers, prototyping new features and interfaces to showcase Yahoo’s entertainment content (movies, music, TV, celebrities, games). One of the great things about working at Yahoo is the huge traffic they enjoy, which guarantees plenty of eyeballs on your work. Also, there is a great vibe to the place – everyone seems very cool and psyched about working here.

This job has meant a move to Santa Monica, California. It’s a big change from my previous home in Cambridge, MA. So far it’s been 72° and blue skies every day. I’ll have to brush up on my surfing skills 🙂

As if that wasn’t enough change, I’ve also switched my work machine to a Mac. Wish me luck as I fumble around looking for the right-click button and trying to get the ‘End’ key to work.

Can I recommend this site to help you adjust to the switch a little easier?

Keep in mind that you can, and should, connect your mouse with left and right buttons. Most applications offer right click options, just as you had available in the PC environment.

don’t worry, the right-click was a 90’s thing. now the mac even does windows too. surf’s up, santa monica!!! stay out of the local hotspots, sometimes the locals are not so friendly and can be very territorial. congrats on your new job.

Good luck at Yahoo! The Mac will be a breeze to learn. Once you have used it for a while, you will not want to switch back to Windows.

  6. congratulations on the new job and move. also, glad to hear that you swapped to a mac. what kind?

Ah, you got the major two problems when switching: right clic and “End” key! Get TextMate as a development editor and in two weeks, you will wonder why yuo hadn’t switched before! You won’t even think about “End key” or right clic.
Many thanks for your awsome gallery freebies. They’re simple, nice, elegant, functional, classy. Good luck in California.

  14. Man, I feel your pain! I’ve been making that move from PC to Mac for the past few months as well. I just blogged about it (again) at http://www.soky.biz . Thanks to the Spencer comment for the link too. Congrats on the Yahoo gig and good luck in Sunny California!

My Mac has a right click and an end key 🙂 If those are the only 2 hangups you should be a very happy switcher.

Gratz on the new gig. I’m jealous of you SoCal folk.

First Mac in Santa Monica…che culo!

How is the Mac conversion going? By now you should be realizing how much time you can save from its stability and power features. Oh, that end key…command + right arrow key. Also, use option + arrow keys and function + arrow keys. Smultron is a great text editor and terminal is your friend.

That new parking structure is one of the fanciest I’ve ever seen, also you’re standing right next to my old High School.

It’s posts and photos like these that make San Francisco feel just not quite as awesome as Santa Monica.

osx is great. But why osx instead of linux with a laptop 1000$ cheaper for the same hardware?

And being used to more than one mouse button, this should be a useful control panel for your Mac – it lets you configure the mouse buttons, wheels and speed…
