Server Migration Woes

server fail

My apologies for the site downtime over the last few days. It’s been a very frustrating experience.

The trouble began when I decided to move this site from its current host (web.com) to a MediaTemple (dv) account I use to host some of my other sites. The idea was to improve site performance. Once the static files, blog and forum were copied over and the DNS was flipped, the MT server crashed. The server continued to crash over the next few days.

Despite repeated tech support calls, no one has been able to tell me why the server is crashing or how I can fix it, so I’ve been forced to revert back to my original host for the time being. Unfortunately some forum posts have been lost in the database shuffle. If your post has disappeared, please re-post it. Again I apologize for the inconvenience.

I’m curious, what was your reasoning for migrating to (mt)?

Felix let me know if I can help. Long time no talk, hope things are well with you.

Ouch! I had the same issue with MT. -It sounds like a good service until it does not work and then they will not help. I am moving a client site away from them now. FYI their servers don’t seem to pass the PCI standards review either.
    I feel your pain.

I use Servint (VPS) – I highly recommend.

Yeah, MT can be quite frustrating – it seems they have the “cool factor” thing down, if there is such a status for hosting companies, but not the actual “hosting factor”.

Just got turned on to your site, glad you’re back up.

Well put. Took me about 1 week to see through the B.S. I’d advise you to stay far away, Felix.

If you need FMS, Influxis or Akamai.

Yup, check out (mt)’s popularity over on webhostingtalk.com.

I moved to a VPS with wiredtree.com & have been super pleased… their customer service is fantastic, too.

I’ve been using them for over 10 years and they continue to get better and better. Sorry you had issues with your service.

I will spare you the details, but MT is the worst hosting company I’ve dealt with in 13+ years (and no, the others weren’t $5 hosting companies, corporate sites). Tried MT DV and Grid, both sucked eggs. I don’t understand their popularity. Customer service is useless, or perhaps only exists if you are a famous blogger (9rules?) but for me it’s always taken 24 hours to “resolve” a simple question, by sending me a knowledgebase link that I’d listed in my issue report as non-sufficient, *and* they have the nerve to mark the issue closed.

Tried several alternative, but whenever there’s trouble, I’m happiest with the clients that I host on Mosso. Their support is simply outstanding, the servers fast, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who will listen.

    Frustrating.

Have you had any experience with bluehost? I host a couple of sites through the company–support and resources seem pretty great. And no crashes to complain of!

Thanks for letting me know. Some “media temple”! Doesn’t sound very good if flash vids crash a “media” server. I like Rochen, myself, for my bicycling site for credit-card touring. I saw the MT ads in my Twitteriffic interface and was kind of interested.

You make great image viewers, btw!

  12. I’ve had great experiences with jetnethost.com. I don’t use their VPS or DS options, just regular shared hosting. I had some issues migrating over and they were absolutely great with helping me out, they always got back to me within minutes and would usually have the problem solved quickly. I also needed some special stuff done for MU WordPress and they worked with me on that and got it taken care of quickly. I mainly selected them because they don’t seriously oversell (ie. godaddy) their products and they had great reviews.

I have several sites running at MT, and a few very strange things have been going on while the migrate the cluster I’m on (3) to their newer hardware. The pain will be over soon.

Hi, my firm specialises in server migrations and I also have a lot of experience of hosting with MT as well as other companies. MT have generally been quite good over the years but they have certainly had their fair share of problems. I would only generally use them for a development site though, not a live production site. Recently been using Dreamhost – very reliable and excellent value. FYI – In the end I moved all my sites to AptHost. They have been great.
