I’ve run into a road block in developing an application idea I’ve been toying around with for at least a year. Over the past month I’ve scoped it out and wire framed the functionality. I’ve shown it to a few friends for feedback and they all feel it’s got legs for success. After much deliberation, I feel that the best platform for this application is a native Mac app. First of all, because I use a Mac and I would be [...]

Through vivid stories, Luke will showcase several of these principles in action, including:Thinking "outside in" using [...]

Think back seventy or seventy-five years to a time when design began to break away from the traditional and elaborate rationalism that ensued for hundreds of years. Well on the heels of the Industrial Revolution, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Streamline and Zigzag Moderne emerged as designers as well as consumers fully embraced the Age of the Machine. Shiny chrome surfaces lay across curving forms or over expansive horizontal planes and glorified a dynamic new world on the move. And suddenly design [...]

I competed in the Boston stop of the Cut & Paste World Tour last night. There were three categories: 2D, 3D, Motion. I rocked out in 2D, and won it! So now I'll be heading to the World Championship in New York in a couple months. More photos and video from Boston will be up on the C&P website soon. For now, check out these iPhone pics. It was a lot of fun. Great to meet fellow designers, the C&P crew, [...]

It’s great when good design solutions to the world’s most basic problems can be found, and the Peepoo Bag is one such example. Over 2.6 billion people have no basic access to sanitation, meaning that disease can become rife. Peter Thuvander has been involved on working on the Peepoo Bag, a revolutionary new product, and sent us some information on how it can benefit over a third of the world’s population. Peter’s site explains, “The Peepoo bag is a sanitation [...]

Day Five: Sunday, March 15 It is not a question of whether scam ads exist (of course they do), but rather, what is the strategy for dealing with them? Sometimes called a "ghost," a scam ad is loosely defined as any creative work done for a bogus client or for a real client without [...]

I just got back from a nice lunch with Lou Rosenfeld and Kevin Cheng, made up of great hamburgers from Casino and some interesting conversation about publishing. All of us have a pretty solid footing in this world: I published my book myself, two years ago; Kevin started the now neglected ok-cancel, and is working with Lou on a book on comics; and Lou is trying to change the way the book industry works, specifically for practicing designers. I view publishing [...]

It’s a great interview, but what’s of particular interest is that Stewart plays a clip of Cramer from December 2006 talking about how easy it is to manipulate Apple’s stock price — at that time by spreading baseless rumors that the then-not-yet-announced iPhone had been rejected by both Verizon and AT&T. ★

theodp writes "Just when you thought annual reviews couldn't get worse, BusinessWeek reports that HR departments at companies like Microsoft and IBM are starting to use mathematical analysis to determine the value of each employee. At an undisclosed Internet company, analysis of (non-verbal) communications was used to produce a circle to represent each employee — those determined to generate or pass along valuable info were portrayed as large and dark-colored circles ('thought leaders' and 'networked curators'), while those with small and [...]
