Flickr Postcard Viewer

Here is a little application that lets you browse thru Flickr’s huge image database, by searching for tags (keywords).

It’s quite amazing how many images are in Flickr. Type in practically any word and you will get back a load of images. I can imagine Flickr becoming a global collaborative image database, like a visual wikipedia.

Many thanks to the Flickr team for putting together a really easy to use API.

  1. Can you also do something similar for Smugmug.com? It too has a programmable interface and other nifty photo sharing features, but nobody’s developed any tools yet.

ok this is trully amazing – one of your competitors, the guy who is doing SlideShowPro has created the ability to load an OPML document containing several RSS feeds of Flikr groups. I’ve been using this to create personal Group based galleries that load into the .swf.

If I could do this with your “Postcard Viewer” you have some serious amount of downloads from people – it would be incredibly useful. It seems you must have something like this gooing on on your Flickr Postcard Viewer.

Can you make this interface work with the flash gallery viewer?

Using the xml file and local images instead of flickr?

I recently purchased the simpleviewer. Are you looking at developing a flickr version of this?

These are some great projects by the way. Great job.

Is it possible to add a similar search facilty to the standalone postcard viewer? I have a large collection of photos to display but sorting into individual categories is not always appropriate. Would be great if visitor create his own collection via search terms.

    Thanks for ongoing great work!

Looks great but what about copyrights? Your showing copyright images and creative commons images without any attribution?

  11. Felix says:

Steve – there is attribution. Click the ‘View Flickr Photo Page’ button to go to that image’s flickr page.

your apps are amazing gadgets that I really would have to play with and embedd in my personal website. Any plan to release also flickr postcard viewer and flickr tag viewer?

If you improve the selection capabilities by adding also the user, one could use flickr as the storage and your app as a front-end integrated in the website.

Cool implementation!! As for your comment about a “visual wikipedia”, Flickr is already being used as a source for images for other web sites. The state of WV’s tourist division uses a Flickr group wv.gov to show photos of our beautiful state that are posted at Flickr. The Encyclopedia of Life also has a group at Flickr and uses an automatic search engine to mine for images by searching machine tags for taxonomic information. The editors then choose from amongst the images mined and display selected Flickr images in their database of living things with attribution included and the ability to link back to Flickr to see more by the same photographer. I have several images that are being used by both groups. So you are less prescient since it appears that the “visual wikipedia” is NOW and not in the future!! Thanks for a great app!
