Flash 8 font filesizes are bigger

If you create a movie containing an embedded font and publish in Flash 7 then Flash 8, you’ll notice that the Flash 8 swf is a few K larger. For Times New Roman, Basic Latin characters, Flash 7 is 13k versus Flash 8 at 17k.

I guess this is the tradeoff for the improved font rendering in Flash 8. So, if you are trying to squeeze every last K out of a swf, you might want to publish as Flash 7.

Can you say for example publish an assets SWF and then use MTASC to publish your movie as flash….removing the extra KB and also using flah 8’s new features (blur blah blah blah etc)

Any chance that SimpleViewer will be remade in Flash 8? It’d be nice to have the fonts displayed a little better.

  3. I think you could use MTASC, but you might not get the smoothness of the new rendering engine, if you don’t embd this extra data, like Flash 8 does.

Not suprising. The extra font size is probably the extra font hinting. which is what allows flash to make the font look nicer. No hocus pocus is going to make that extra KB disappear without degrading the font.
