Last Wednesday night in New York City, I attended what Gary told us was "the first screening of Objectified in front of real, live people." The room was filled with fans, contributors, well-wishers, and a few designers from the film, and though its official release will be at SXSW in Austin tomorrow (Core77's Stu Constantine will be moderating a panel with Hustwit and 3 stars of the film), it was great to get a sneak peek at the thing. (We [...]

Yakkay bicycle helmets create a normal look by camouflaging the protective shell with a cool hat. This product reminded me of a few years ago when we worked with a client in the construction gear business who wanted to produce a premium hard hat, positioning against the near-disposable incumbent. They were already convinced that the value could be increased by solving functional problems (comfort, temperature, sweat), but our research identified that one of the biggest issues was a social one: [...]

If you find the new highlights column on the sidebar of the new Facebook design to be distracting and not useful for you, I’ve made a way for you to hide it. You’ll need to use Firefox web browser for this to work. 1. Install this Firefox extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108 2. Restart Firefox 3. Click on the button saying “load into stylish” on this webpage: http://userstyles.org/styles/15910 That’s it! Enjoy.

I’ve been a fan of Steven Johnson since I first read Interface Culture close to a decade ago; I remember it as one of the most poignant and well written discussions of software – and the relationship between digitalness and humanness – that I’d ever read. It’s still ranks as one of the best articulations of the fleeting quality of designing for behavior; one of my favorite passages describes the elusive quality of the digital realm: For all the kinesis, the [...]

Most ads that attempt to be weird fail for one of two reasons. Either they're trying too hard and feel forced (like the crappy series with Jack in the Box's round-headed mascot) or they don't go far enough (like Old Navy's SuperModelquins, which are hardly weird at all). When the proper balance is achieved, however, it can be a thing of beauty. Which brings us to Sol beer's campaign from DDB Argentina. See all three ads here. They manage to [...]

Steffan Postaer, chairman and chief creative officer of Euro RSCG Chicago, is sending us daily updates as he judges the Dubai Lynx awards this week.Day Three: Friday, March 13 As might be expected, the Dubai Lynx is less frantic a pace than the festival at Cannes. Judging the proceedings has been painless by comparison. It also afforded me opportunities to get to know the personnel involved with putting on the show: members from the International Advertising Festivals and other vendors. [...]

Everyone still wants a piece of Barack Obama, but a casino in Indiana is among the first advertisers to be pressured to pull an Obama-themed ad. The spot, shown above, features a pretty good Obama sound-alike (it's not actually him) talking up the grand opening of the Indiana Live! Casino. "Our time for change has come," the voiceover says. "Months ago we began the work of making sure that the Indiana! Live Casino is superior to anything that existed in [...]

I’m signing off for the weekend friends, I have so much work to do as I’m pulling together chapter outlines for my agent since I am working on a book (yay!). Honestly, I’m scared to death and though I’ve been back and forth with my agent for months, embarrassing to admit, I finally am ready emotionally to wrap my head around what a book will mean for me, my life, and of course my career and future. I want to be [...]

A number of folks on Adobe's internal design team have been putting the beta of GridIron Flow through its paces. Among other things, Flow can automatically version your files (much like Apple's Time Machine, but continuously as you work and without relying on an external drive). I just saw this comment from designer Cynthia Fong: Yesterday, I accidently saved over a file that I didn't want to, so I opened it in FLOW and retrieved my previous version. SWEET! I've always [...]

These days Bernie Madoff makes an appearance on the cover (or at least the inside fold) of the paper with alarming frequency and investors far from South Florida are feeling the repercussions not only of his very literal Ponzi scheme but also facing a growing realization that our booming residential and stock markets were also houses of cards. The housing market, however, lacks a gray-coiffed figurehead upon which to pile indignation. Cases could (and have) been made for names like [...]

Here is a great excuse to put your design skills to good use: The 2009 DiabetesMine Design Challenge 21 Million Americans live with diabetes, yet the devices we rely on generally don't hold a candle to the sleek design of consumer electronics (think iPod)... This is your chance to win up to [...]

Last night's WHAT THE *#&! IS SOCIAL DESIGN opening brought together a community of thinkers, all with a soft spot for social change. The exhibit (which runs through March 31) explores the potential for change through design: What is it? Who's doing it? I want to do something too but where do I start? Creators Ashley Ciecka and Mike Jeter, two MFA students at the Academy of Art University's School of Graphic Design, sought out and interviewed socially engaging designers [...]

The 2009 Emerging Technology Conference offered an incredible opportunity to catch some of the cutting edge ideas that are shaping the way we look at the world. Several recurrent green themes formed bridges between luminary speakers from a variety of backgrounds, as Alex Steffen, Mary Lou Jepsen, Jeremy Faludi, and others reinforced the need to create repairable, open-source, long lasting products, reveal energy usage, and pursue forward-thinking strategies for a greener tomorrow. Read on for our highlights from the conference! [...]

Sometimes conceptual artists make pieces you would never consider actually using in your home. In fact, we’ve featured a couple of those on this site. But we could see ourselves finding a place for nearly each of product designer John Caswell’s items in our own abode because they aren’t terribly intrusive. In fact, they would probably make mundane tasks easier, or at least more pleasant. For instance, his “taps” transform common water faucets into new, useful products like bottle openers [...]

Saving me from having to transcribe my presentation, the very well-organised Lift09 conference got Swiss French Television to film all the talks. So please see the embedded video at the end of this entry. When I finally got to deliver this speech, I'd been travelling for some time without rest, as previously noted (and indeed, as described at the beginning of the talk). So perhaps understandably there were a few points I accidentally missed out, or stumbled over. Firstly, the reason [...]
