No, that photo up above is not a joke. Tough times breed interesting solutions, and that's one of them. Twenty-seven-year old Seattle resident [and architect] John Morefield...was laid off not once, but twice in a single year as projects dry up and small firms tighten budgets. So what's a boy to do? Watch Peanuts cartoons and hang out at the local farmers' market? Why yes indeedy. Morefield's concept for Architecture 5¢--edificially inspired by Charles Schulz's psychiatrist booth for Lucy--is bringing [...]

If Jackson Pollack had driven a BMW Z4 Roadster, perhaps he might have first conceived of the project devised by artist Robin Rhode: Rhode used an all-new 2009 BMW Z4 Roadster as his paintbrush to create a bold, dramatic, contemporary piece, one of his most ambitious to date. From a tower 30 feet above his canvas, Rhode choreographed the movement of the BMW Z4 Roadster, which was mounted with special paint dispensers behind its wheels, across the canvas, while filmmaker Jake [...]

Morgan Levine grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and moved to Brooklyn to study industrial design at Pratt Institute where she graduated in ‘04. It was during her first freelance job at Martha Stewart when she was assigned to create bunches of crepe paper daffodils that a love for crepe paper was born. She started to experiment with turning it brooches and barrettes. Today, she is making paper goodies for her company Amble Through Bramble. My mother and I made a ton [...]

I was tempted to add a Friday the 13th image at the top, since this is our second of three superstitious Fridays of 2009. But, there was a more important date to recognize. On March 13th, 2009 the World Wide Web will turn 20 years old. Which begs the question, what will become of the web next year when it's old enough to buy alcohol and gamble in Vegas? Watch out! On a more serious note, the... Read more

Just a quick note to remind you that the UX Magazine crew will be keeping the Twitter feed @uxmag well up-to-date while we wrap up porting the whole site to Drupal 6 (we’re about 90% done). We won’t be posting much until the move is completed. It’s running on our dev environment and we hope to start increasing our news output dramatically as soon as we re-launch. We’ll also be ‘leaking’ some information on the new design which should come a [...]

Everyone still wants a piece of Barack Obama, but a casino in Indiana is among the first advertisers to be pressured to pull an Obama-themed ad. The spot, shown above, features a pretty good Obama sound-alike (it's not actually him) talking up the grand opening of the Indiana Live! Casino. "Our time for change has come," the voiceover says. "Months ago we began the work of making sure that the Indiana! Live Casino is superior to anything that existed [...]

My good friend Anne, who I hang out with when I’m based in Germany, just told me about her creative friend Kerstin who is a product and interior designer based in Hannover too. I’m really looking forward to meeting Kerstin in person when I’m back in Germany this year. She owns a new DaWanda shop called Domestic Candy that I really like, her things are so sweet that I have to share them with you today. I’m also including a peek [...]

completed in 2007, openhouse is a residence that sits atop the hollywood hills, designed by
xten architecture. the home sits on a relatively small site that is very narrow and steep. however the
challenging site, led the architects to create a design that embraced it constraints. the final concept is
integrated into the landscape using retaining walls that extend the first floor directly into the hillside.
these walls also serve to create small private gardens on each side of the home. [...]

For anyone who uses their iPhone to its fullest capabilities, you know that while the features are fruitful, the battery life span is not. PhoneSuit offers extended use time without extending the phone's size, with their sleek MiLi Power Pack. We've been testing ours out and found quite a few useful components making it a worthy contender in a market that includes the Mophie and Fastmac's iV. One of the more convenient aspects is that the power pack charges quickly, [...]

Quite a few people I know seem to think that shit is really about to hit the fan. I'm talking hysteria, riots, complete global market collapse, extreme chaos. We'll see. If the apocalypse does arrive, I hope I can scalp my ringside seats. It's in that spirit that cultural critic Mark Dery took a look back at his classic millennial meditation, the 1999 book Pyrotechnic Insanitarium: American Culture on the Brink. Mark has decided to offer up essays from that must-read [...]

Spring is almost here! That means goodbye cold weather and short days and heeeeello sunshine! We aren’t quite there yet though which means there is still time for spring cleaning! We recommend a cleaner, greener lifestyle this year by using eco-sensitive products. You will certainly find the goods at the Green Depot whether you visit the flagship retail store in New York City or their helpful website. Yet, we know that sometimes you are seeking something special and eco-quirky, which [...]

The series is comprised of six lamps, each derived from the same idea. kjellgrenkaminsky.se [...]

Apparently, I would. Here's the thing. Some [...]

Here's a little inspiration for your Friday. Filmmaker Bruce Branit has created World Builder, in which "a strange man builds a world using holographic tools for the woman he loves." I've embedded it below, but it's worth hitting the full-screen viewing button (next to the Vimeo logo). This is how smooth and effortless I'd like Photoshop to feel. Bruce was one half of the two-man team that produced the excellent 405: The Movie on their desktop computers back in 2000 (more [...]
