Sydney-based Emily Valentine Bullock sculpts, primarily using feathers, which she collects from birds killed by cars and cats, and from people's dead pets. More recently, she bought a trapping and killing machine to collect feathers from Australia’s registered pest, the Indian Mynah. From these oddly sourced materials, she creates very odd, but rather beautiful sculptures. Most of these are strange hybrid creatures—dogs with wings and bird-headed dolls. She also makes beaded and feathered brooches and bangles which can be purchased [...]

A quick congrats to frog design on their 40th anniversary, set to celebrate with their SXSW kick-off party tomorrow night in Austin. Here's from the release: "For the last 40 years, frog has been focused on helping our clients to create meaningful products and experiences that improve people's lives," said Doreen Lorenzo, president of frog design. "This is a tremendous milestone, and as a long time supporter of SXSW, there is no better community to help us celebrate the occasion [...]

There are certain places that people expect text to be rote, boring, and dry. When you come in with some humanity instead, it really stands out. Example: Sönke Johnsen’s “Advice For Potential Graduate Students,” a wonderful piece of writing that is given to lab applicants. An excerpt: In many ways you will turn into your advisor. Advisors teach very little, but instead provide a role model. Consciously and unconsciously, you will imitate your advisor. You may find this hard to believe [...]

by Kelsey KeithLast week we were taken aback at NYC's Pulse Art Fair by artist Dietrich Wegner's "Playhouse," an installation shaped like a mushroom cloud and built like a tree fort covered in swaths of cotton. A study in contradiction, "Playhouse" mingled with tattooed babies and dotted light paintings in Chicago gallerist Carrie Secrist Gallery's booth. Wegner creates "images that are safe and unsettling, abject and beautiful... all in an effort to explore our varied states of contentment and security." His [...]

Coming off our review of The Big Necessity, we were inspired by a recent email concerning the PeePoo, a plastic bag-cum-toilet for the developing world. So we got in touch with the designer of the device, Peter Thuvander, to provide some first-hand reflections on the project. Here's Peter: It could be that the cruel reality of shit has escaped you. To let you in on the numbers, approximately 2.6 billion people lack sanitation. The consequences of this are horrific. One [...]

The Area series by Anya Sebton for Lammhults shown at the Stockholm Furniture Fair was a mix of faded elegance and contemporary line. The modules can be put together as a sofa, but stand alone even better as armchairs. The Concrete Things Grid by Komplot for Nola is a wire frame armchair that has a concrete counterpart with a completely different attitude. The Pebble armchair and ottoman from Osko Deichmann are tidily contained, tightly upholstered cushions in sensible wire frames [...]

I’ve always loved the constraint of a 4-track cassette recorder. So when I first came across FourTrack, a simple recording app for the iPhone, I figured I’d give it a whirl. I grabbed my trusty ukulele and laid down a little tune I often play to the kids. The audio records right from the iPhone’s built-in mic. The quality is impressive. Then I grabbed my three year old son Jack’s toy percussion kit, and banged along to the uke track. In [...]

DesignDroplets has just published a fascinating interview with Richard Kuchinsky, designer and Core77 forum contributor. It's impossible to pick the choicest paragraphs from the thing, but the section on how footwear design really happens will surprise you: The process as I described earlier just doesn't need CAD for the most part, so it is not used. There would be no point in doing the upper design of a shoe in CAD when a 3 view line drawing in Illustrator is [...]

When the new owners of this beautiful wood-clad home decided they needed to update and add a bit more space to the house, who better to renovate it than the architects who designed the original? Re-enter, New York-based Bates Masi Architects, who worked out a plan to enlarge the kitchen and dining areas, modernize the bathrooms, and refinish the floors, walls and counter tops. Materials and wood from the house were kept and re-used in the renovation, minimizing the need [...]

I tried a yoga class at one of those touchy-feely yoga centers. Everyone came in with one of those rolled-up mats. The instructor offered me a mat. I declined; she, and everyone around me, looked at me like I was crazy. But when you see photos or drawings of the guys who invented yoga, they're always sitting on some bare mountaintop without that silly waffle-ized rubber thingy, no? I feel the same way about yoga mats that I feel about [...]

Check out the rest of Grosemans' rather interesting body of work here. (more...)

this week.Day Three: Friday, March 13
