BMW Group Designworks USA has branched out into gaming computers, and their new "Level 10" PC tower concept for Thermaltake is a doozy. And like most Designworks project, beyond the eye-candy factor is a combination of philosophizing and functional-izing: The inspiration for this approach the design team took right from the computer worlds themselves - expressiveness, virtual townscapes and futuristic game components served as orientation for the arrangement and the look of individual components. Each high-quality component featured by the [...]

Finally, a piece that can do two things at once - and do them well. The Neosho Flat Panel TV Stand is the best of both worlds when it comes to mounting your flat screen TV. It offers you the best viewing angle possible by acting as a flexible wall mount, but because it is in actuality a floor mount, you get the durability and stability of that part of the design as well. The sleek, slender stand is constructed [...]

IconEye has a great interview up with Marc Newson on his design of the interiors for Qantas' new A380s (with plenty of photos). An excerpt: So, was the goal with Qantas to restore the glamour? Well, we had an opportunity to do that with this new aircraft type. I mean it was such a kind of "one off" opportunity as they say. Something like the A380 comes along only once in a generation, the last time it happened was the [...]

Tim Berners-Lee on TED 2009 - "Twenty years ago, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. For his next project, he's building a web for open, linked data that could do for numbers what the Web did for words, pictures, video: unlock our data and reframe the way we use it together." - (TED Blog)

The Rubik’s Cube, the Hula Hoop … sure they’re fun toys, but they’re not exactly versatile. Our friends at Zoomdoggle may just have this decade’s answer to those influential fads with BuckyBalls, a jar of 216 multi-functional rare earth magnet balls that are more fun than a barrel of ionic charged monkeys. Whether you’re using them as jewelry accessories or as a medium for a metallic sculpture, the highly adaptable novelty toy will keep you occupied for hours figuring out what [...]

I totally love it! “It wasn’t a huge budget or a ton of people working on it, but we all wanted to make something cool and artistic using Microsoft Office software 2008. We’ve been cranking away at this thing for months. So here it is! [...]

Japan already has robot spokeswomen. But now the land of Godzilla and Hello Kitty is going a step further: robot teachers. According to the AP, the first such android educator, named Saya, "can express six basic human emotions," which is more than most flesh-and-blood teachers can usually muster. The emotions, by the way, are surprise, fear, disgust, anger, sadness and happiness. She'll need the first five for the daily grind of public schools. The last will come into play when [...]

Most ads that attempt to be weird fail for one of two reasons. Either they're trying too hard and feel forced (like the crappy series with Jack in the Box's round-headed mascot) or they don't go far enough (like Old Navy's SuperModelquins, which are hardly weird at all). When the proper balance is achieved, however, it can be a thing of beauty. Which brings us to Sol beer's campaign from DDB Argentina. See all three ads here. They manage [...]

I came across this piece of goodness by a recently graduated graphic designer named Hanisted out of central Brazil, who took ink to crackers and turned out a topping that’s refreshingly unpackageable. It’s a miracle that pen didn’t perforate them. Besides snacks, he’s had his illustrations printed in a newspaper called O Popular, as well as for the press relations department at his university. It shouldn’t be long before some bigger media outlets tap this enthusiastic artist whose style walks the [...]

If you’ve seen images at the Whitney, SF Museum of Modern Art, or Minneapolis’ Walker Art Center (or the Magnum Photos archives for that matter), the shots of photographer Alec Soth may have caught your eye. The Minnesota-based artist’s photos are colorful yet haunting, and his most recent frameset, shot in the days before President Obama’s inauguration are no exception. “The Last Days of W” is a visual critique of the impact that the outgoing head of state had on [...]
