Creativity Series - Just Do It! {9}

decor8 | Mar 12, 2009 10:03PM

Writing today’s topic for the Creativity Series was a bit of a struggle because I am sensitive to how the economy is affecting others and despite how badly I want to radiate hope and positivity I don’t want to come across as happy-go-lucky, annoying, or perhaps naive to the problems that many are facing. But you know what, I’m not going to over cook this because who knows, maybe some of you need this reminder so this week we’re going to [...]

Because fair is fair...

Mule Design : Off the Hoof | Mar 12, 2009 10:00PM

After 14 years of crushing the musicians’ spirits with ‘meh’ and ‘fail’ reviews Pitchfork has created something THEY care about. I’m giving away a bucket of Mule t-shirts to whoever can write the most Pitchfork-like review* of Pitchfork’s redesign. Leave your review in the comments. We’ll know when we have a winner. Might have a few. Please enjoy yourselves. * Here’s a random sample.

Make A Difference. NOW.

Logic+Emotion | Mar 12, 2009 09:31PM

P&G is doing something you might want to be a part of tonight. Instead of marketing in the usual way, they are going to ask you to buy some T-shirts. The shirts are cool, retro and I'm wearing one right now. If you buy one 100 % of your money will go toward Disaster Relief, specifically Feeding America this is the type of organization that can be mobilized to make a huge difference in future "Katrinas" should they happen (unfortunately, [...]

Turning The Tide: An Insider's Perspective

Logic+Emotion | Mar 12, 2009 09:31PM

From left to right: Deb Schultz, Me, Kevin DuganThe e-mail that hit my inbox several weeks ago said "you are invited to attend a digital hack night at P&G". It didn't say much more than this, other than to clarify that all the participants in the e-mail were not to talk about the invitation and had to keep it quiet. The list on the e-mail was impressive. Folks from companies such as My Space, Facebook, Google, combined with numerous agencies [...]

Names Never Spoken in the Original Star Wars Trilogy

Daring Fireball | Mar 12, 2009 08:03PM

With regard to the item below, regarding Star Wars names and terms which became well-known even though they were never spoken by the characters in the films, Cameron Daigle is compiling a list. AT-AT? Y-Wing? These things are all so deeply ingrained in my brain that it never occurred to me that they were never mentioned by name in the films themselves.  ★

Smaller, lighter, longer lasting batteries

Pop Wuping | Mar 12, 2009 06:36PM

U.S. engineers have found a way to make lithium batteries that are smaller, lighter, longer lasting and capable of recharging in seconds. And because they use older materials in a new way, the batteries could be available for sale in two to three years, a team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported on Wednesday in the journal Nature. For Seattlites, the IDSA Northwest Chapter is hosting the Northwest Design Invitational awards ceremony on Saturday, a presentation of some of the best work from the Western US over the past two years; the event is now in its 12th biennial incarnation. If you're in Austin, on the other hand, you probably already know all about the [...]

Contxts: SMS Business Cards

Eyebeam reBlog | Mar 12, 2009 06:33PM

While old-fashioned business cards have their charm, it's a little surprising that a digital service like Contxts, an SMS-enabled way to share contact info, hasn't come along sooner. After entering info online, users can send their "text card" to mobile phones (or someone can request it) by texting the preset Contxt number. The new contact then receives the info and they're entered into a virtual rolodex accessible through Contxt. Tapping the power of social networking, all the other details, like [...]

Adam Kalkin: Shipping Container Architecture

Eyebeam reBlog | Mar 12, 2009 06:33PM

Would you live in a shipping container? Until firms like Lot-ek, retailers like Freitag and architect Adam Kalkin started turning them into chic examples of creative re-use some years back, most wouldn't consider the question seriously. Kalkin's efforts stand out for drawing on the strengths of sturdy construction while also representing a new level of luxury that comes with an affordable price tag, in some cases even under $100,000. With the ongoing housing crunch and talented architects marketing home solutions, [...]

ShamWow Soundboard | Flash

Eyebeam reBlog | Mar 12, 2009 06:33PM

Sorry, I had to include this. There have been many nights where I have truly considered ordering the ShamWow. Vince's enthusiasm is tough to avoid. I even saw someone demonstrating the product at a fair last summer; and it was a good thing I had already spent my money on fried Twinkies and beer. --xb Originally posted by kira91 from Delicious/tag/awesome, ReBlogged by xtine on Mar 12, 2009 at 09:15 PM

Swatch Love Explosion Ring

Sub-Studio Design Blog | Mar 12, 2009 06:05PM

I can't tell if I like this Love Explosion Ring or hate it. It's so gaudy and over-the-top but I think I like it because it's so super-bling. And it reminds me of rock candy, and who doesn't like rock candy?

Imagining the future of Imaging

frogblog | Mar 12, 2009 06:05PM

I spent 3 days last week at the European Congress of Radiology, previewing the latest technologies for acquiring, processing, viewing, analyzing, and archiving diagnotic images of the human body. Wow! The technical and clinical innovation in this field is astounding.  Science, Technology and Medicine converge to create wondrous solutions to view and analyse the inner workings of our bodies.  One clearly emerging trend is that new imaging modalities and analysis tools are exponentially increasing the quantity and quality of diagnostic information available, [...]

Is Patrick wearing his Kern sweatshirt?

Veer: The Skinny | Mar 12, 2009 06:04PM

We've got a contingent at SXSW who've just reported back with news of this gem of a website. In the spirit of Has the Large Hadron Collider Destroyed the World Yet?, let it be known that at the time of posting, Patrick Haney WAS indeed wearing his beloved Kern zip-up. Or, he is doing a very convincing job of making us believe so. Either way, we think that site is pretty awesome.

Ewoks, Ewoks, Ewoks

Daring Fireball | Mar 12, 2009 05:33PM

From Dan Vebber’s outstanding “50 Reasons Why Return of the Jedi Sucked”: But aside from what we see onscreen, the Ewoks are miserable little creatures for a completely different reason: they are the single clearest example of Lucas’ willingness to compromise the integrity of his Trilogy in favor of merchandising dollars. How intensely were the Ewoks marketed? Consider this: “Ewok” is a household word, despite the fact that it’s never once spoken in the film. I’ve seen this movie dozens of [...]

An ugly thing I saw today

Noisy Decent Graphics | Mar 12, 2009 05:00PM

I saw this s'morning. Awful isn't it.  I can see what they're trying to do with the whole orange and passionfruit and water in the middle thing. But, seriously, the execution is shocking. And it the graphic device is so fucking big. It's like the opposite of when the account people make the logo bigger and the device smaller. Awful.Which is a shame, because I always liked that Brains ad...

SXSW 2009 PepsiCo Zeitgeist Twitter Visualizer

information aesthetics | Mar 12, 2009 04:31PM

The Tweetsphere is already quite crowded with aggregate and visual interfaces (think Twitter Blocks, Tweet Stats, Tweet Volume Twitter Meter, Tweetpad and many more), but this one seems to stand out in terms of its interactive and real-time tracking features, maybe conceptually similar to those found at Digg Labs. PepsiCo SXSW Zeitgeist [pepsicozeitgeist.com] is an online tweet visualizer, designed by Slash7, that takes the pulse of SXSW 2009, a five day symposium celebrating the best minds and the brightest personalities [...]
