One of my favorite exhibits currently on view in Chelsea, "New Paintings by Lui Shtini" at Van De Weghe Fine Art serves as yet another reminder that painting, in the right hands, is far from dead. Shtini's paintings bear the precise strokes of an obsessive while his subject matter betrays the predilections of a unsettled mind. Or, perhaps not. The paintings on view, stylistically reminiscent of Magritte (though shrugging off any surrealist trappings), may elicit unease but they do so [...]

The new "Made for each other" campaign for Lay's by Goodby, Silverstein and Partners suggests that Lay's chips and dip were destined to be together. Yet the five beautifully animated spots (see them all here), each done in its own lovely style, don't show either product. Instead, they tell stories of strange and delightful items falling in love. The spots are all engaging and endearing, and have lovely song choices to match. You can also try out the beautiful, intricate, [...]

Steffan Postaer, chairman and chief creative officer of Euro RSCG Chicago, is sending us daily updates as he judges the Dubai Lynx awards this week.Day Two: Thursday, March 12 The judging for Dubai Lynx began with Television. I assume they chose TV as the opening category because it is usually a crowd pleaser at advertising award shows. Unfortunately, this was not the case in this contest. Of approximately 250 submitted campaigns, I saw, let me see, none that were [...]

Here's a fun idea from Adidas. To celebrate March Madness, it's taking four of its endorsers who jumped straight from high-school basketball to the NBA and imagining them on the college teams of today: Kevin Garnett at UCLA, Dwight Howard at Kansas, Tracy McGrady at Louisville and Josh Smith at Pitt. See all four ads here. It would have been fun to see Kobe Bryant, another college dodger, in this kind of situation, though of course he's ex-Adidas and now [...]

After 14 years of crushing the musicians’ spirits with ‘meh’ and ‘fail’ reviews Pitchfork has created something THEY care about. I’m giving away a bucket of Mule t-shirts to whoever can write the most Pitchfork-like review of Pitchfork’s redesign. Leave your review in the comments. We’ll know when we have a winner. Might have a few. Please enjoy yourselves.

We talk about the design of an online web based application. Part 1 of the series focuses on the web based form where the user experience is critical before the user enters the application. The various aspects include a good entry point into a [...]

The role of the information architect (IA), interaction designer, or user experience (UX) designer is to help create architecture and interactions which will impact the user in constructive, meaningful ways. Sometimes the design choices are strategic and affect a broad interaction environment; other times they may be tactical and detailed, affecting few. But sometimes the design choices we make are not good enough for the users we’re trying to reach. Often a sense of democratic responsibility is missing in the artifacts [...]

No current software supports the full process of collaboration. That’s a bold claim, and I hope that someone can prove me wrong. This article is more of a “Working Towards …” position paper than the final word; written in the hope that the ensuing discussion will either bring to light some software of which I’m not aware, or motivate the right people to develop what’s needed. There is plenty of hype about “Collaboration 2.0” at the moment, but the bugle is being blown too [...]

Would you live in a shipping container? Until firms like Lot-ek, retailers like Freitag and architect Adam Kalkin started turning them into chic examples of creative re-use some years back, most wouldn't consider the question seriously. Kalkin's efforts stand out for drawing on the strengths of sturdy construction while also representing a new level of luxury that comes with an affordable price tag, in some cases even under $100,000. With the ongoing housing crunch and talented architects marketing home solutions, [...]

When I reflect back on the Helvetica Film, I'm surprised that I can't really remember very much about it. Can you? (OK, so I only ever got to see the shorter version that was shown on the BBC.) But the one thing that does stick in my mind is the trailer which shows an interview with Wim Crouwell. He's not really talking about Helvetica, at all - is he? He's talking about Modernism. But he's also reflecting, I think, on how [...]

After Audi's success of the A4 Driving Challenge on iTunes App Store, Volkswagen has teamed up with Fishlabs (http://www.fishlabs.net) to release Volkswagen Polo Challenge 3D. With stunning graphics, fast/addictive game play and 10 un-lockable stages - this app is sure to gain a long running top spot as Audi did. And yes, it's free. There are a few stability issues being reported, but as all iPhone owners know this is common with new apps and a update to fix will [...]

Editor's Note: Yes... some things are worth sharing, even two months late. Originally a post sent around by Sam Cannon, praise for this fantastic campaign reentered my inbox this week from Adam Turinas as something his "70 something aunt in Canada emailed it to me. Hhhmh! This internet thing could be big". Proving a good campaign doesn't just touch the hearts of us marketers, but 70 year old Canadian aunts. On an otherwise average Thursday morning in January, T-Mobile UK [...]

For quite some time I’ve had this very annoying bug on my office Mac. Every time I rebooted, all default applications were reset. Text files would open with TextEdit, HTML files with Safari, .aspx files with iCab (yes, really), and so on. Extremely annoying. Well, it took me a while but I finally figured out that the problem was caused by FileVault. In case you’re having the same problem, here’s more detailed info: 10.5: Force FileVault to read Launch Services data [...]
